Omega 3 Questions
What is Omega 3?
Imagine a fibre that is very long, bendy and flexible. That’s an Omega 3 DHA/EPA molecule. Bendiness and flexibility are good because it means that it lubricates the arteries and joints, and makes signals flow easily around the brain. That means Omega 3 can improve mood and concentration, and help with learning. It is also critical in maintaining a healthy heart.
The DHA/EPA tells you it is the long-chain type of Omega 3, which is only found in oily fish. You see it is the long-chain form that has a real bearing on your health - Omega 3 from plants doesn’t, because it is ALA or short-chain and only 5% of it can be converted by your body to the useful form of Omega 3.
We source our Omega 3 from fish and then blend it with delicious and powerful superfruits to ensure there is no fishy taste, but all that fishy goodness! We call it ‘stealth health’!
What is RDI?
Recommended Daily intake is what RDI means. It’s not an RDA (recommended daily amount) because there is not really an upper limit on how much Omega 3 you can take. You should have at least 450milligrammes per day (about ½ a gram put another way). Not hard really. A slice of salmon has 2500 milligrams which the Japanese who are really healthy have every day. But not us.
How much Omega 3 do we use in a serving?
20% of the daily recommended intake of Omega 3. We believe in putting in enough Omega 3 (DHA/EPA) to make a difference to you. Every food and drink has 20%, or 90mg, of your recommended daily intake in a serving. A serving is a 250ml glass of our juices.
Other companies cut costs by putting less in, or using the cheaper Omega 3 from linseed.
How many Omega 3 molecules are there?
Have you been swotting? That is a smart question. There are three, each of a different length. A short one, medium one and long one. Shorty is found in plants such as walnuts, linseed and grass. (The body has to make it into medium or long ones to be any use, which ain’t easy.) The Medium and The Long one for hearts and brains. The only source for these is fish.
Have the different lengths got different names?
Oh, wait a minute. We are the Sparky ones around here! YES. Shorty’s nickname is ALA. Old piggy in the middle is DHA and the The Long one is EPA. You may see DHA and EPA written on packaging. You need both and all our foods have half and half.
We can’t taste Omega 3. Why?
That is part of our secret recipe. We have worked hard to blend our special Omega 3 with the juices. You get 20% of the RDI without any taste, which is just what we want.
